Biographical Sketch:
The Lithuanian Montessori Society of America was founded in 1958 by Professors Adomas and Maria Varnas and Domicele Petrutis in Chicago, Illinois. Its goal was to promote the Montessori Method of education and to provide full immersion in Lithuanian language and culture by establishing Montessori schools in the Chicagoland area. The Lithuanian Montessori Children’s Center opened in 1963, and the Žiburėlis Lithuanian Montessori School followed in 1983. Žiburėlis Lithuanian Montessori School, located in Lemont, Illinois, is a full-immersion Lithuanian preschool, with the goal of both fostering children’s education using the Montessori Method and providing full immersion in the Lithuanian language and culture.
Scope and Content:
The Žiburėlis Lithuanian Montessori Collection consists of 6 linear feet and 5.5 linear inches spanning the years 1960-2013. The collection contains official documents, newspaper clippings and articles, government paperwork, photographs, and programs for the school’s annual fundraiser.
Series Information
Series 1: General School Information, 1965-2011
This series contains general information such as tuition information, academic calendars, attendance lists, lesson plans, articles on the Montessori method, fundraising information, and official documents of the Lithuanian Montessori Society of America.
Series 2: Event Information and Documents, 1967-2013
This series contains programs, plans, budgets, film, and other memorabilia from various school events and fundraisers. Most, but not all items, contain information regarding the annual fashion show, the schools’ most lucrative fundraiser.
Series 3: Photographs, 1961-2011
This series contains photographs of students and events at the schools.
Series 4: Newspaper Clippings and Correspondence, 1957-2011
This series contains newspaper clippings and correspondence sent to and from the school.
Series 5: Miscellaneous, 1963-2008
This series contains books guestbooks, government documents, issues of Mūsų Vaikas, and other miscellaneous documents.
